What Is WinZip For?

At times, files are just too large to easily transfer on a flash drive, CD, or over the internet. In these cases, one solution is to compress or "zip" the files into an archive. This is a special container for one or more files that allows them to be transported in a smaller size than the original file. Winzip is a program that allows the user to "zip" files into this archive, or, to "unzip" files from an archive so that they can be accessed.

  1. Zipping

    • Winzip is a program that can put one or more files into larger container for them that will have the ".zip" extension.

    Unzipping

    • Winzip can also "unzip" files already in an archive; this includes files ending in ".zip".

    Cameras

    • The current version is Winzip 12.0 for Windows, and it contains the ability to compress files directly from a digital camera.

    Usage

    • In order to use winzip, it must be first installed, this will then allow you to double click on any .zip file which will then automatically load the program.

    Trial

    • Though Winzip is free to download, you can also use it for 45 days before the trial period expires and the program asks you to register the program in order to continue use.
