If you want to preserve the life of your laptop and use it in many years to come, then avoid these 10 ways to kill your laptop.
#1. Tripping Cords
This sounds really stupid, but this is very common. You have your laptop plugged in and charging and you have a mouse plugged in and maybe even a headset. You put the laptop down on the bench for a minute and start to walk away, but the chords are wrapped around your feet. The laptop drops to the ground. Does this sound familiar to you? If this has not happened to you then I would be very surprised.#2. Putting The Laptop Away When Plugged in
When your laptop is charging, there is power going to it and it can still be rather hot. This is why you should not put your laptop away in its carry case when it is plugged in. The actual laptop charger gets very hot, the cord gets bent and broken, and the laptop is still charging endlessly in the bag. This is not good at all.#3. Resting Your Laptop Bag
Be careful where you put your laptop bag down. One day I put my laptop bag on a chair and later that day, someone pulled the chair are out on the laptop fell to the floor. My laptop now has a broken corner and a dodgy hinge. This damage occurred even though it was in a leather laptop bag.What about when you travel on an aeroplane. You should never store your laptop in the storage area above your seat. Other passengers come along and stuff their luggage into these compartments and I’m sure that many laptops get damaged this way.

This might not kill you laptop but it annoys me to no end! Touch screens on laptops after for touching, and some screens are not for touching.Have you ever had a friend come along and point at your laptop screen to show you something? They might have dirty hands or maybe they push their finger into the screen. If you are lucky enough to have a laptop with a gorilla glass screen then good for you, but most of us has fragile LCD screens. The best way to protect your laptop is not touch the screen as it will keep it clean and dint free.
#5. Eating And Drinking
Eating and drinking sounds like a rather harmless activity but not if you are doing these things near your laptop. Eating a hot dog and sauce can be dangerous if the sauce oozes out onto your keyboard, well not dangerous but it can make your keys very sticky. A drink, on the other hand, can be absolutely disastrous! A friend of mine split his can of drink across his entire keyboard and that was it, the laptop was dead. He had close calls before but this accident drenched the laptop quicker than he could tip it upside down to save it.#6. Causing Hot Stuff
I always advise my customers to purchase a laptop cooler if they intend on using it in bed or on the couch while under a blanket. Airflow is important for laptops because I have had to repair many a laptop because of overheating damage. People talk about exploding laptop batteries often, but people choose to ignore these stories as something that could not possibly happen to them.#7. Things That Kill Your Laptop Battery
Where do I start with laptop batteries? These, along with the chargers, are usually the first to go in a laptops life.Here are a few ways to kill your laptop battery:
- Bending the cord that charges the battery.
- Charging the laptop when it is not used all of its charge.
- Leaving the laptop plugged in all the time.
- Cooking the battery by placing the laptop on a bed.
#8. Static Electricity Can Kill Your Laptop
Laptops can be damaged by static electricity, just like when you open a desktop computer and work on that. Therefore if you must open your laptop, you need to touch the metal casing before touching anything else. This releases the static electricity from your body and saves your components.But sometimes people might grab a part of the laptop that looks like metal, so they are not actually grounding themselves at all. Others touch the metal casing but while standing on carpet which creates more static electricity. This means that if they remove their hand from the metal casing, then create more from the carpet, the static can get through to the components they touch. I guess that is why it is better to use an antistatic strap so you can have a constant connection with the metal parts and keep your laptop safe.
Here’s another little story. I am a bit crazy when it comes to fixing my own computers.. I would fix everyone else’s to perfection but my own units were always a rush job. One day a friend and I did a quick repair on a motherboard in one of my laptops. We ripped it open, fixed it, and quickly put it back together. We lost some screws in the process. Anyway obviously the laptop needed every screw to be replaced as it started to give me shocks each time I touched it. Not only is this dangerous, it can most definitely kill your laptop.
#9. Lending Your Laptop Out
This might sound like a harmless act and you probably feel good about it at the time, but what about when your laptop is damaged while in the possession of a friend? Is your friend going to pay to fix your laptop or even replace it? Not only does this kind of thing test a friendship, it often also can end a perfectly good relationship. People with nothing invested in an expensive object tend to treat other people’s property with careless disdain. You might even think your friend will guard your laptop with their life, and they probably will try, but accidents happen. And when it comes to money and repair costs, this does not go well with most friendships.#10. No Maintenance At All
People often think that because Laptops are portable and convenient, they do not need regular computer maintenance. But the files are building up on the hard drive, just as they do on a regular computer. Errors and crashes start to occur from neglect and the laptops cry out for care.Even dust gets sucked into the vents and starts to make a laptop overheat a lot quicker. It is not rocket science, the dust needs to be cleaned out from the laptop, just as it would from a desktop computer. But don’t kill yourself when trying to save your laptops life as this dust can be harmful to humans.
