Standby
-
Your computer may be set to go into standby or sleep mode after a set amount of time. In standby mode, your computer screen and hard drive will turn off but some of the computer's hardware and lights will remain on. Your computer will resume from standby mode when you press the computer's power button, click the mouse or use the keyboard.
Display Selection
-
Most laptop computers have a control to switch between the laptop's on-board display and the external display adapter. If the laptop is switched to external display mode when no external display is connected, the screen will be blank but the computer will continue running. Most laptops use a combination of the "Fn" button and one of the function keys at the top of the keyboard to toggle between display modes.
Faulty Connection
-
A poor connection between the computer and the display or a bad power cable can cause the monitor to turn off or go blank. Check the monitor's power supply to ensure that it is switched on and delivering power to the monitor. Verify that all cables are securely connected. If your monitor cable has screws on the connectors, make sure that they are screwed into the computer case and the monitor to keep the cable snug.

What Is Wrong With a Computer When the Screen Goes Black But the Lights & Computer Stay On?
Several display issues may cause a computer screen to turn off while the
rest of the computer continues running. Typically, these issues are
relatively minor and easy to fix, though they also may be symptomatic of
a broken or failing computer monitor.
