How to Recover a Disk With Software

Recover a disk with software by using a second computer and attaching the disk as an external or secondary drive. When a disk has been formatted or the partition deleted it becomes necessary to recover the disk with software or to send the disk to a data recovery lab for professional services. Specialized disk recovery software often allows retrieval of files from a disk that the operating system will not recognize or a disk that has errors preventing normal access.

Instructions

  1. Data Recovery Software

    • 1
Update the working computer with the latest operating system patches and service packs from the website of the software maker. Install or update virus protection on the computer to prevent infections from recovered files from spreading.
    • 2
Obtain and install data recovery software such as one of the programs listed in the resources section of this article. Check for any updates or patches to the recovery software and install them if available.
    • 3
Attach a USB hard drive adapter to the working computer and follow any prompts to install the necessary driver software or utilities that come with the adapter. Connect the drive which is to be recovered to the adapter and connect power to the drive.
    • 4
Run the data recovery software and scan the attached drive for files using the basic method first, and if files are not found run the scan again using a more progressive scan algorithm such as format recovery or raw scan.
    • 5
Store recovered files on a separate storage location such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive or network location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Power off any computer that has a drive which needs to be recovered and do not use the drive until the recovery process is complete, as the operating system constantly creates and deletes various temporary files in the process of running and these files greatly reduce the possibility of successful data recovery. Send drives with sensitive or critical data directly to a data recovery lab for the best chance of recovery.
  • Never install data recovery software onto a drive that has to be recovered as the installation process will likely overwrite files that could have otherwise been recovered. Never handle a drive while it is running and do not subject the drives to moisture, vibration, impact, or excessive heat or cold.
