How to fix DLL Errors

If you are wondering how to fix DLL errors you probably have a computer running a Windows operating system. you might be seeing an error stating that there are missing DLL files on your computer or you might even be getting a blue screen on your computer. Either way, you can fix DLL errors.
DLL stands for Dynamic-link library. A DLL file is used by applications on your system, and without them, most programs will not run. One single DLL could possibly be providing resources for more than one application on your computer and this is where we run into problems.
Just say the DLL file was a book in the library and an application used the book to run. The file might be damaged when it returns and when another program tries to use it there are problems.
Also when you remove a program from your computer, sometimes the shared files that other programs also use gets deleted. Then when an application tries to run, you have a DLL error as the DLL file is now missing.

How to fix DLL Errors

There are so many different DLL errors, but the most common is when it is missing or corrupted. Therefore you can try the following steps when fixing a DLL error.

Scan For Viruses

If you do not think you have caused the DLL error then the first thing you should do is scan for viruses. Sometimes a virus can damage a DLL file or even replace it all together. If you do not have a virus removal program on your computer or you can’t start your computer you can create a virus rescue cd.

Find The Missing File

Maybe you did something to create this problem. If you think you have then sometimes fixing a DLL file error can be as simply as restoring a file from the recycle bin. If Windows will not start at all then try starting your computer in safe mode and then recovering the missing files.

Recover Deleted Files With Software

This is probably going to the extreme, but you can use free data recovery software to recover your DLL files if you have already deleted them from the recycle bin.fix dll errors

Update Software

Just performing a Windows update can fix DLL errors as new updated files might be packaged into a service pack or even a patch.

Run the SFC / SCANNOW Command

If the missing DLL files have something to do with the Windows operating system then you can run a command to compare original windows files with the ones you have now on your computer. The Sfc / scannow command will check out your system and replace files that are missing or corrupted.

Remove and Reinstall Programs

If you are having trouble with a particular application that will not run due to DLL errors then you can uninstall the software and then reinstall again. This means that you will then have all new files on your computer and the program should run.

Download Updated Drivers

You may see DLL errors if your drivers are out of date for your computer hardware. For example the ATI2Dvag.dll error occurs when the drivers for a ATI Graphics Card is out of date. You can update your drivers to get rid of this problem. However to avoid this kind of problem from occurring in the first place, you can install software that will scan your drivers and let you know when they need updating.

Format Windows

This is a last resort. If you chose to format your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of windows on your computer, then your files will be lost. It is nice to have a new and clean computer again but there is a bit of work involved in this procedure. For one thing, you will have to backup your files if you can and be ready to restore all your drivers and software.

Notes on How To fix DLL Errors

  • Never download a missing or corrupted DLL file as they can contain a virus. A DLL file is essentially the same as an EXE file but without the execution part, so they can be dangerous. Not just that, there are sites out there with outdated files so it is not worth downloading them to your computer.
  • If you get a DLL error after you have just installed Windows, this could mean that the disc you used might be faulty. There could be some damaged data that might cause a ntdll.dll error. You can simply make a copy of the disc and reinstall again.
  • When installing or removing a program you might see a missing msvcr71 or mfc71.dll and the best way to overcome this error is to undo what you did. If you removed a program then reinstall it. If you installed a program then remove it. You can also use system restore to get yourself out of trouble.
  • Just because you see a computer error message does not mean it is not a virus. Always check for viruses when your computer does anything strange. That is the best way to protect your computer.
